I spent my afternoon at a charity benefit concert for a foundation that my family has been volunteering for and supporting since I was a little girl. I learned, sang, performed, and even modeled in a fashion show when I was 7 or 8 for this charity, the Tzu Chi Foundation, and as I got older, I was able to actually volunteer and help people in need. I have grown up on its Buddhist values and beliefs, and am certain I will continue to grow with them.
There is so much to write about the day, but recognizing that this isn’t my journal, I just want to share the main takeaway that’s been revolving around my head all afternoon. And that is this:
There is nothing in this world that you should appreciate and cherish more than being loved. I’m not just talking about romantic love. I mean all types of love. The love parents have for their children, the love children have for the parents. The unique love you have for each of your good friends as well as that usually unspoken love you have with your siblings. It’s important to take time to make sure those people know they are treasured in your life.
And what’s maybe even more important than simply taking a step back and being grateful for those people, is to show how that love has made you a better, stronger you. Take that love, and go out into this world without fear, without self-doubt, knowing that there are people behind you who will open all the doors they can for you and still be there whenever you stumble or fall.
Gear up with the love that surrounds you, and share yourself with the world. At least that’s what I feel my family and closest friends have been able to do for me, and I want each of you (who are reading this now) to know that I am eternally grateful for that. And I hope have enabled you to do the same.
